There are two major opal producing in Ethiopia. Mezezo opal or Chocolate opal from Shewa province and the Welo opal from Welo region.
The Mezezo opal is noted for the wide range in the size of the nodules and incredible variety of colors. Inside the nodules you may find: Contra Luz opal, cachalong and hydrophane opal, which absorb 50% of their weight in water. Also you may find crystal opals from clear to cherry red. Mezezo opal has a reputation for outstanding fire colors and hydophane qualities.
Welo opal is known for its brilliant play colors that includes Contra-Luz, Mosaic, floral, harlequin, honeycomb, chaff, pin fire and snakeskin/leopard skin. The majority of the Welo opals is crystal with some dark based caramel and some black opals from Istayish area in Welo.
